A Day at the Art Museum
Saturday, January 28, 2017
At Elena’s suggestion, we spent the afternoon at the newly reopened SF MOMA, described by Wired as “a slab of glacial ice floating down Third Street” since its opening last spring. The review in the NY Times pointed out that “subtle flexing of the senses continues, stimulated not just by the art but also by the continual surprises of the building’s design and details.” It really is an impressive building, light and airy, but we decided to focus instead on the “details.” A photo essay from SF MOMA.
No question about it, the building is still a work in progress. I'm guessing the paint bucket has white inside.
More progress.
Minimalism is a major feature of the structure. No Maintenance Department, just Maint. And no fire extinguisher, just a little picture.
Don't take the red elevators, take the silver ones.
And definitely don't take these elevators.
Finally, the silver elevators!
In case you take a wrong turn on one of those elevators, there's a Calder mobile directing you to Big Sur.
You can visit the Matisses, the Diebenkorns, or end up in the White Box. It's straight ahead. Not sure about the instructions of getting to Floor 3 or Floor 5. Beware of snakes?
There is really no way to describe the bathrooms here, except to show them. I did see everyone who walked in jump, exclaim, swear. The bathroom is red. Very red. Very very red. I want to talk to the artist who designed it and ask him his favorite color.
All kidding aside, it was a great trip, an interesting museum in a spectacular setting. Though we don't like all kinds of modern art, we did really like this spider webby installation by Tomas Saraceno called Stillness in Motion.
